city of lakes. The marble palaces, beautifully laid out gardens and seven manmade lakes make
Udaipur seem almost like a mirage in the desert. |

The history of Bhadrajun dates back thousands of years and is even mentioned in the famous Indian epic,
the Mahabharata. We are guests of the Raja, an avid conservationist, at his
16th century palace residence. |

The Bishnoi,
Desert Dwellers of Rajasthan
We visit a Bishnoi village. The Bishnois are self-sustaining and
live much the same way they have for hundreds of years. For centuries
the Bishnoi people have been protectors of wildlife and the environment
and are feared by poachers who will be set upon and beaten by
the Bishnoi. |

Bishnoi Hamlet,
Stone ground Millet
Marie tries her hand at grinding millet in a traditional Bishnoi home. The
villagers grow millet and grind it into flour to make chapati. These chapati,
cooked and dipped in hot chile paste, are a mainstay of the Bishnoi diet. |

Chari, Ceremonial Wedding Dance
North Indian Dance has evolved over centuries in the Indian desert.
In the villages of Rajasthan, these hypnotic dances add color and
brilliance to festivals, fairs and other celebrations. Chari, an
amazing folk dance, is performed by women at wedding ceremonies
with an arrangement of pots and a lighted lamp balanced on their heads. |
